Sachin Tendulkar, still recuperating from a shoulder operation he underwent in London last month, has requested the BCCI to count him out for the five-match one-day series in West Indies next month, starting May 18.
Sources close to the ace batsman said he may opt out of the Test series too, as he wants to be fully convinced that his is fit to play. After being out of action for nearly six months last year due to a ‘tennis elbow’, Tendulkar, who turns 34 this Sunday, was operated on his right shoulder last month for a cyst and a tendon tear.
The BCCI, however, said Tendulkar would confirm his availability for the four-Test series in June by May 10. ‘‘He (Tendulkar) isn’t comfortable yet and has requested to opt out of the one-day series. After a fitness test on May 10, we will confirm whether he will be available for the Test series or not,’’ said BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah.
‘‘Whether he makes it to the Test team or not depends on his recovery and the doctor’s assessment,’’ Shah added.
Tendulkar, the sources said, is concentrating on post-surgery recovery. ‘‘He is steadily recovering and has been advised a 26-day rehabilitation programme,’’ they said. His fitness, the sources said, will be judged by the strength and control of his right arm that was in a lot of pain during the last couple of months.
‘‘He is obviously wary of rushing it, especially after the trouble he faced with the tennis elbow condition,’’ they said. The Indian team for the West Indies tour is expected to be named on April 20, three weeks before the side leaves.
