Asia, Afro-Asia Cup postponed

Monday May 22, 10:30 PM

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The Asia Cup one-day tournament has been put off until 2008 due to a packed schedule, an Indian board official said on Monday.

The six-team event was initially planned for Pakistan in February but was postponed after India withdrew citing a tight calendar.

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) which met in Colombo on Sunday expressed concerns over its financial impact after India suggested the postponement but the members eventually agreed.

"This year we already have the Champions Trophy and the World Cup early next year, so we can't do it," Indian board secretary Niranjan Shah told Reuters by phone.

The ICC Champions Trophy is set for India in October-November with West Indies staging the World Cup in March-April next year.

An annual Afro-Asia Cup one-day series launched last year in South Africa was also pushed back to next year due to scheduling problems, he said.

The second edition, initially planned in India in September, would now be held in Africa in June next year with Malaysia to host the third edition in 2008. The event has a three-year television rights contract.
