Expert Comments - India vs Bangladesh
March 19, 2007
India of course have a better chance if they can win both their remaining games in the group, but Pakistan need a miracle to survive. Both teams batting let them down. Pakistan have a good line-up, perhaps not as strong as India’s, but one that is good enough against minnows. As it turned out, the minnows Ireland had a surprise waiting for them. They used the conditions very well to dismiss Pakistan for a small total and then got to it without any fuss.
India may want to think that they were a bit unlucky to bat when the ball was moving around, and Murtaza bowled very well indeed. The Bangladesh spinners, all left-handed, also ensured that the Indians weren’t given anything loose and the fielding of the team was tigerish, and it just lifted the team with the extra efforts that the young guys put in.
Ganguly and Yuvraj did a good repair job, but the overs were running out fast, and when Dhoni was out without scoring, India knew that they would be lucky to get to 200.
The Bangladeshi side has some fine confident young players who are not afraid to play at this level, and the manner in which they set about getting the Indian total was remarkable. They were not afraid to loft the ball and charge down the pitch to the new ball, and took the game away from India before the Indians realized it.It was an outstanding performance, and now the pressure is on India to win both the remaining games to stay in contention for moving into the Super Eight stage of the event.
My Man of the match is split between Murtaza, who got the initial wickets and put India on the backfoot, and Mushfiqur, who not only kept wickets superbly but who came in and batted with great common-sense to ensure that there were no hiccups to Bangladesh winning the game.
