Expert Comments - India vs Bermuda

March 20, 2007

India have given themselves a chance to qualify for the Super 8 stage of the World Cup by the big margin of their win over minnows Bermuda. The Bermuda skipper did India big favour by opting to field first and this allowed the Indians to put up a massive total their first 400 plus in ODIs.

The game also allowed Sehwag to get among the runs again and though the attack was not even shoolboy standard, runs are runs and do help the confidence. Sehwag played as only he can and Ganguly cleverly gave him most of the strike to get his form back.

The former captain missed out on another ODI ton getting stumped but has shown that he is in good touch and that augurs well for India. Also in great touch were Tendulkar and Yuvraj who batted with panache and played some top inventive shots to leave the poor bowlers flummoxed as to what and where to bowl to them. Yuvraj too missed out on a century but he had done brilliantly in giving his team the launchpad that it needed and the little champion made sure that it wasn’t wasted.

The Bermuda batting was hardly better than its bowling and all India’s bowlers had a good workout. Kumble preferred to Harbhajan, bowled well as did Zaheer, Agarkar and Patel but the Indians need to look after the extras in wides and no balls which may prove costly against Sri Lanka.

Man of the Match has to be Sehwag for his century and the way he stuck to his guns and got back to form. All India will be hoping that this ton is just the first of the two or more that are required to win the world cup.
