Expert Comments – New Zealand vs South Africa
April 16, 2007
New Zealand’s easy win over South Africa propels them into the semi-finals of the 2007 World Cup. This game was expected to be a tough encounter, but South Africa were outwitted by the New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming. The Kiwi captain is in his fourth World Cup and third consecutive one as the leader, and he brought all his experience into play in ensuring that South Africa were not allowed to get away. By putting South Africa in, he gave his new-ball bowlers and Bond in particular, the chance to utilize the freshness in the pitch and then in the middle overs, he bought in McMillan, who took three wickets and did not allow the lower order any freedom to throw their bats around.
An asking rate of less than four runs an over means a team can play normally without trying to hit over the top or play ambitious shots. Fleming and Styris played themselves in and saw to it that there were no tensions and nerves in the dressing room. The win, when it came, showed that New Zealand is indeed the dark horse of the tournament and can do the impossible.
The last few matches left will see a close fight between South Africa and England for the fourth place in the semi finals.
The Man of the Match is Craig McMillan for his three wickets and then batting calmly to take New Zealand past the meagre South African total.
