The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to take stock of the state of women's cricket in India and chalk out concrete plans for domestic calendar in consultation with its Women's Wing in May.
Shubhangi Kulkarni, former secretary of the Women's Cricket Association of India and convener of the BCCI's women's cricket committee, said on Monday that even though the exact agenda of the meeting is yet to be decided, the domestic calendar will be one the most important topics likely to be discussed.
"The BCCI has called for a meeting now since this is off-season and #8230; We think that the domestic circuit will definitely be put in order," said Kulkarni.
Women's cricket at the domestic level has lagged over the past few months, with not even a single tournament being played after the BCCI took over. Tournaments at the under-19 level, the national sub-juniors, Twenty20 matches and several other events were not held since the BCCI was busy hosting the women's Asia Cup and the Quadrangular Series.
"We have to strengthen the sport at the grassroots level," said Kulkarni. "To do that, sorting out the domestic calendar is of utmost importance at the moment."
With no international women's tournament lined up by the BCCI, this is probably the best time for it to execute its plans and take the women's game to the next level.
