Manavjit pips big guns en route to Khel Ratna

By IBNLive.com

New Delhi: The suspense is over. The country's yearly sporting awards have been decided. Shooter Manavjit Singh Sandhu will step up on August 29 to recieve the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna from President Pratibha Patil.

He is the reigning World Champion in trap shooting. Manavjit Singh Sandhu has been one of India's most consistent shooters over the last couple of years.

He made the finals of all international competiton last year, and capped it by becoming the first Indian shotgun shooter to win gold at the World Championships.

That triumph also saw him become World No. 1. He simply outgunned all competition when it came to deciding the Khel Ratna.

"I am very honoured to have received the recommendation. I've had a very successful year, and I'm very satisfied with the way my career is progressing so far. No my sole purpose and focus the Olympic Games of Beijing," Sandhu says.

The man who did give Manav some competition was for the Khel Ratna was golfer Jeev Milkha Singh. He may not have won medals for the country, but 2006 was indeed a breakthrough year. He won a European tour title and finished on top of the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

"I was very result oriented in the last six years. But I told myself after I won the Volvo China Open to just go out there and try to follow my process and routine and see what happens," Jeev had told CNN-IBN in an interview.

Along with Jeev some other big names also had to bow down to Manav. Mahesh Bhupathi once again failed to make the cut while Indian cricket captain Rahul Dravid wasn't even on the radar.

Manav's Khel Ratna couldn't have come at a better time. He's just back from a break and is all set to mount a challenge at the World Shotgun Championships next month. But more importantly he is one of the country's main medal hopes at the Beijing Olympics.
