Chennai, March 22: Anil Kumble was confident that India would continue the good job that began in Australia. Speaking ahead of the series opener here on Saturday, Kumble said the team was ready to take on the challenge against South Africa who have competed well here in the past.
"We have a lot of respect for the South Africans, their record in the subcontinent is good, it should be a exciting series."
The Indians had a light ground training and fielding session. The wicket that has been under cover for long but Kumble felt it was a "typical Chepauk wicket" that normally assists turn during the later half of the Test. The skipper noted the team was on a high after the one-day series win in Australia and it would not be a problem for the team to shift the focus back to the longer version.
India coach Gary Kirsten said the three weeks he had spent in Australia with the team would stand him in good stead and the period helped him understand the players better and it also helped in preparation for future assignments.
Kirsten explained he held no advantage as a South African when it comes to drawing up strategies for India against his country. "In this day of television and video analysis every player is discussed threadbare."
Both the coach and skipper said the appointment of Paddy Upton would help the side. Kirsten clarified Upton was not here to pass information on the South African side but to add value to Indian side and the side would certainly benefit from his experience in the long run. Kumble also noted a player of Kirsten’s caliber and rich experience would help youngsters in the side.
Rumours on Kirsten’s report to the BCCI that asked for the removal of fielding coach Robin Singh made headlines but the new coach said the claim was baseless as he is yet to send any report to the board. The tough series against Australia is now history and Kumble is proud for the manner in which the team bounced back but the series was marred by some needless controversies. Kumble promised the intensity would remain the same and the crowds would remember the present series for the cricket played and nothing else. Kumble also confirmed their would be no change at the top of the order with Rahul Dravid continuing to bat at three.
