Roshan Mahanama, the ICC match referee who will officiate in the India vs South Africa three-Test series, arrived at the M A Chidambaram in Chennai with a specific purpose on Sunday morning.
The former cricketer sought some time with India captain Anil Kumble and later South Africa's Graeme Smith to explain to them in brief ICC's latest initiative in suggesting that players should take individual responsibility while respecting the Code of Conduct.
All boards, team captains, umpires and match-referees received the ICC's letter last month seeking support to curb the sledging menace and other recent controversial incidents. The ICC has suggested that players need to behave as role-models and make a personal effort in this regard.
Mahanama, it is learnt, met the captains and explained to them the importance of speaking to their respective team members and ensuring smooth proceedings.
While he refused to comment, Mahanama did acknowledge the fact that he had come "to speak to the captains on respecting the spirit of the game" in the series beginning Wednesday.
Meanwhile, sources in the board informed that the administration has also taken its own share of initiative in ensuring that players behave properly on and off the field and nobody in the crowd gets away with unruly behaviour.
