Chennai, March 25: South African captain Graeme Smith is determined not to let the quota row affect his team’s performance against India. During their Bangladesh tour, South Africa’s quota-based selection policy hit the headlines as the axe fell on Andre Nel for the three-Test series against India. Later, Charl Langeveldt pulled out.
On the eve of the Chepauk Test, Smith said the Proteas were mentally prepared to challenge the Indians. Excerpts:
On team combination: We will maintain our winning combination of the Bangladesh tour. We will be fielding a spinner as tracks in the subcontinent assist turn. It will be a real test for our youngsters who will be playing in India for the first time. I am happy with the current squad though the selection sparked off controversy back home. In a way, it is a bonus that we could come here to focus on cricket. We are mentally prepared and have spent considerable time in planning.
On his team’s chances: India have brilliant, experienced players. There is a buzz about their team composition of youth and experience. This is a wonderful chance for us to prove our worth. We have a bowling attack that is capable of taking 20 wickets to win a match. I guess we are in with a good chance.
On his goals for the series: I have the toughest job of opening the innings as well as leading the side. The responsibilities on my shoulders are huge.
