BCCI to introduce national school cricket

By Indo Asian News Service

Chennai, March 25 (IANS) In order to promote cricket at the school level, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will shortly introduce a national championship at the school level involving all its affiliated units.

BCCI treasurer N. Srinivasan informed reporters after a working committee meeting that all states will stage the first phase of the tournament. Two top schools from each state would progress to the next level and eventually the champion school would be identified.

The detailed modalities are being worked out, he said.

The board also decided to rationalize junior cricket by clubbing the under-12 and under-17 categories into under-16, and doing away with under-15, Srinivasan said.

'Thus, we will have competitions in the under-16, 19 and 22 categories from next season,' he said.

He also said the board has hiked the 'infrastructure subsidy' to its affiliated units from the present Rs.4 million to Rs.500 million so that better facilities would be made available around the country.
