CHENNAI (Reuters) - South African opener Neil McKenzie was out for 94 but led a solid top order display on day one of the first test against India on Wednesday.
The visitors reached 304 for four at stumps after spinners Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh chipped in with two wickets each in the last two sessions.
McKenzie added 132 runs for the opening wicket with skipper Graeme Smith, who hit 73, before number three Hashim Amla took over after South Africa won the toss and chose to bat.
Amla was 85 not out at stumps with AB de Villiers on 10, after all rounder Jacques Kallis (13) and Ashwell Prince (23) failed to drive home the early momentum.
