MIAMI (Reuters) - Sri Lanka were inching towards victory at tea on the final day of the first test in Georgetown, Guyana on Wednesday after Chaminda Vaas claimed three wickets to reduce West Indies to 229 for six, chasing 437 for victory.
Vaas had Marlon Samuels caught behind for 10 after lunch before clean bowling Shivnarine Chanderpaul for three off an inside edge.
Fellow left-armer Thilan Thushara also trapped Ramnaresh Sarwan lbw for 72 just before tea with a ball that appeared to be swinging down leg.
It was Sarwan's second half-century of the match. He top-scored with 80 in the first innings.
In the final over before tea, Muttiah Muralitharan had Ryan Hinds caught behind down the leg side for 10.
Out-of-form captain Chris Gayle, batting down the order instead of his usual opener's spot, was unbeaten on 14.
West Indies, who began the day on 96 for one, lost stand-in opener Dwayne Bravo before lunch when he was caught and bowled by Muralitharan for 83.
