DURBAN, South Africa (Reuters) - South Africa test batsman Herschelle Gibbs was charged with drink driving on Friday after spending the night in jail.
Gibbs' lawyer Peter Whelan told Reuters the player had been stopped by police while driving in Cape Town on Thursday night.
"He was pulled over and breathalysed," Whelan said. "He has been charged with drunken driving and will appear in the Cape Town magistrate's court on June 27."
Whelan disputed media reports that Gibbs had been alone at the time he was stopped.
"His wife, Tenielle, was in the car with him," Whelan said.
Gibbs, 34, has had numerous brushes with cricket's authorities throughout his career, but he has never been convicted of a crime.
The precociously talented Gibbs committed his most serious transgression in 2000, when he admitted to accepting a cash offer from former South African captain Hansie Cronje to under-perform in a one-day international against India.
Gibbs was fined and suspended from cricket for six months for his role in the match-fixing scandal.
