The organisers for the Kolkata leg of the IPL were not happy after the decision to bar Shoaib Akhtar from playing the T20 tournament. The paceman, bowling spearhead of the Knight Riders, was expected to be a huge crowd-puller for the seven matches to be played at the Eden Gardens.
The chief of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Prasun Mukherjee, admitted that Akhtar's absence would have an impact on spectator interest. "We heard of the development. Shoaib is a very important player in the Kolkata team, and a crowd puller. Let's see what happens," he said.
There was some more bad news for local spectators, with the organisers now deciding to levy additional charges on ticket purchases. A nine per cent service charge will be imposed on each ticket, which will go to the team owners - Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment. But the 31,000 members of the CAB and its 121 affiliated units will not have to pay the additional charge.
