Kolkata, April 4: The International Cricket Council has appointed Haroon Lorgat as its next chief executive. The announcement came within days after Imtiaz Patel, the first choice for the appointment, refused to accept the offer. Lorgat, 47, who was the former convenor of Cricket South Africa’s selection committee, will take over from current CEO Malcolm Speed following the ICC annual conference to be held from June 29 to July 4.
Lorgat will become only the third CEO in the ICC’s 99-year history. The first to occupy the role was David Richards, who held the post from 1993 to 2001.
"I look forward to an exciting and rewarding journey in a game I have truly loved from a very young age," Lorgat said. He added: "I am under no illusion about the challenges that await me. But those challenges are also opportunities and I cannot wait to start work at the highest level in such a great game."
He also said that he would be benefited by Inderjit Singh Bindra’s presence who has been appointed as principal adviser to the ICC. "We will complement each other," he commented while denying the allegation that the BCCI has been using its money-power to influence ICC matters.
That Lorgat would be Patel’s replacement was reported in this paper. ICC president-elect David Morgan had a meeting with the South African in Pretoria on Wednesday and finalised the issue. The ICC’s recruitment board comprising Morgan, president Ray Mali, vice-president Sharad Pawar and Cricket Australia chairman Creagh O’Connor approved the appointment.
"I am absolutely delighted Haroon has accepted our offer. His skill-set is ideal. He brings experience from the corporate world, has played the game to a high level, has already served as a cricket administrator and been chairman of selectors for South Africa," Morgan said, while Mali described Lorgat as a "great team player". He also hoped that the latter will do "an outstanding job".
Lorgat, a graduate from Rhodes University, played first-class cricket for Eastern Province and Transvaal as an allrounder — left-hand batsman and right-arm medium-pacer. He scored 2,813 runs and took 191 wickets.
