Kallis, De Villiers bury Indian hopes

Experienced Jaques Kallis and young Abraham de Villiers grounded Indian bowling to dust, carving out individual hundreds and creating a record partnership to place South Africa in a commanding position on the third day of the second cricket Test on Friday.

Kallis (132) completed his 30th Test ton while de Villiers scored unbeaten 159 as the duo put on 256 runs for the fifth wicket, a record for South Africa for all 10 wickets against the home team.

The Indian bowlers and fielders wilted under the hot mid-day sun as South Africa scored 413 for five at tea to take an overall lead of 337 with five wickets still in hand at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium in Motera. The mammoth lead, the visitors' best-ever in Tests against the home team after overtaking their previous mark of 321 at Bangalore in 1999-00, has effectively buried any Indian hopes of victory and they need to play out of their skin to save the match.

Mark Boucher (9) was the other batsman at the crease when break was taken. Kallis went past Sir Donald Bradman of Australia and join another Aussie champion batsman Matthew Hayden by hitting his 30th Test century.

After consolidating SA's position in the first session during which they propelled the total from the overnight 223 to 306 without being separated, the fifth wicket pair of Kallis and de Villiers carried on in the same vein eschewing risks but milking the bowling when it erred in line on length.
