South Africa declare at overnight score of 494-7

Saturday April 5, 10:15 AM

AHMEDABAD, India (Reuter) - South Africa declared their first innings closed at 494 for seven before play began on the third day of the second test against India on Saturday.

The tourists hold a massive lead of 418 after they bowled the hosts out for 76 in the first session of the match.

South Africa's commanding performance was built around AB de Villiers' unbeaten 217, his first test double century.

De Villiers put on 256 with Jacques Kallis (132) for the fifth wicket, a South Africa record for any wicket against India.

Saturday's play, originally scheduled to begin 30 minutes early to make up for time lost to rain on Friday, was delayed for the same duration due to damp ground conditions.

The first test in Chennai ended in a draw, while the third and final test of the series begins in Kanpur on April 11.
