Kanpur, April 12: Sourav Ganguly showed steely resolve on Saturday. His knock of 87 not only helped India tide over some middle-order hiccups, but also set up the game nicely going into the third day thanks to the rate at which those runs were scored.
He spoke to the media after his breathtaking 119-ball effort. Excerpts:
On his knock: Considering the surface, this is one of the best I have ever played.
The ball was doing all sorts of things and it was very important not worry to about the explosion.
You get time to play spinners, but at 80-90 mph it is tough, definitely one of my best knocks.
On India’s position: Let’s see what happens. We are about 20 runs ahead and on this surface you never know what’s going to happen.
If the spinners bowl well and we get early wickets and get them out below 150, then we’ll win.
If they get a good score, then it will be difficult for us. But from 152/1 we restricted South Africa to 265 in the first innings, that gives us hope.
On his intent: We decided to be positive and hit the ball if it was there to be hit. The key was to keep the scoreboard moving.
We played Harris well, which helped. It’s a difficult pitch and their bowlers are quick.
So you have to play quickly and bat well to get to 288/9.
On Dhoni’s captaincy: I don’t want to rate anyone’s captaincy.
