India in Cricket World Cups
So how about that Dwayne Smith?
(West Indies v Pakistan 1st ODI, Kingston - Jamaica , March 13 2007 )

Cricket World Cup 2007
The West Indies was indeed in a spot of bother when Smith came in to bat. They weren't doing too good in the run-rate or the runs scored departments and Smith decided to do something about that, eh? And how!

In just 15 balls, he played a cameo of 32 runs. Peppered with fours and sixes, he ensured that the hosts made it to a respectable total. Until Smith's innings, the West Indies looked good enough barely for 180 or 190 but he made sure they went past 200 and through to 241 in the end. And that is not a small total. Especially on a pitch that had something in it for the bowlers. Seam, bounce and movement. One shot that stands out in memory is his heave over mid-on for a six that really set the momentum for a late charge from the West Indies.

And as if that wasn't enough, he then came on and picked up the two most important wickets in the Pakistan innings! At a time when Inzamam and Yousuf threatened to take the match away from the West Indies, Smith stepped up and got rid of Yousuf and then Inzamam and Kamran Akmal off successive balls.

What Smith did for the West Indies was something Michael Bevan would do for Australia for a long time. Bat well at the end and chip in with the off wicket when possible! Although it was Dwayne Bravo that the Windies were looking at for the all-round performance, they would not complain about it coming from Smith! The undoubted man of the match!

MATCH QUOTES

West Indies Captain, Brian Lara
On WI's victory
"It was a very good team effort," "We only used five bowlers and they all bowled very well." "I was satisfied with the score we made after the start we had and thought the guys played well over
the last eight overs. That gave us impetus." Brian Lara told reporters

Man of the Match - Dwayne Smith
On his performance
'I had a lot of practice in the nets so it was just to come out here and be consistent and
keep my eyes on the ball and that's what I did today. I am happy but still disappointed that
I didn't come in not out,' "I have been working really hard in the nets ... all I really wanted to
do was help the team to win,". "We just have to keep doing the basics well now." said Smith

On Seymour Nurse former West Indian player from whom Dwayne Smith sought advice before the World Cup: 'He's played a big part too because he had taught me a few things just to work on and that's paying off so I'm going to keep working on it (my game),' Smith said

Cricket World Cup 2007
Pakistan Captain, Inzamam-ul-Haq
On the toss and his decision to bowl first

"The decision as far as the toss was concerned was fine and the bowlers did a good job," Inzamam said

On the target set by WI
"We should have got those runs,". "I think 242 was a
gettable score. "We thought we could have chased those runs
and we should have chased those runs" Yousuf's wicket was crucial but we lost three quick wickets (at the start) and we could have
done well if we had more wickets left at the end."

"We just didn't chase properly enough and West Indies bowled a
good line and length" "Our middle order is a very experienced batting line-up and we should have taken more responsibility in the opening game of the tournament

On Games ahead
"But we will regroup and come back for the next match." Pakistan will play Ireland on Saturday
before they face Zimbabwe next week Inzamam told reporters
