When Glenn McGrath came in to bowl against Scotland, it marked his 29th appearance in a World Cup for Australia and he probably doesn’t remember losing in too many World Cup matches! Not surprising, really. He now has 48 wickets and is just seven behind Wasim Akram. Without doubt, he will now go ahead of Akram to become the highest wicket-taker in the World Cup.
One of the highlights of his spell against Scotland was the pace and bounce he extracted from the pitch. The ball that got Watson out hooking was a brute of a delivery. Pitched short of a length, it reared up and went at Hamilton’s head who had no option but to try and keep it away from his head. And use the bat to try to do so! In the end, it just flew off the edge to a fielder standing behind square. Good night and good bye!
There was of course the usual nagging accuracy of McGrath that accounted for Watts who had stood around for a while. When not much was happening and coming off McGrath, he tried to move into a shot to make it happen and just ended up getting cramped and pushing the ball back on to his own stumps.
Vintage McGrath… South Africa should watch out!
