India in Cricket World Cups
India shamed

Cricket World Cup 2007
It was a day when India's World Cup dream came crashing to the ground. Playing Bangladesh was supposed to be an easy outing and an expected result was an Indian win. But incredibly bad batting, shoddy bowling and poor fielding came together on the same day to put paid to any hopes India may have harboured.

There were two highlights for the match: Bangladesh bowling and batting. India was just the team taking part in the proceedings. On a bowler-friendly wicket, India chose to bat first and what a blunder that proved to be. Further errors were highlighted in the team selection with Virender Sehwag getting yet another outing. He didn't miss the opportunity to disappoint again and fell to a wayward shot. Thereafter, India struggled and could never make any impact.

The only hint that India was in the game came when Yuvraj and Ganguly were batting. But once that partnership was broken, India lost five wickets for three runs. Only a last wicket stand of 32 between Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel gave India any hope. But it was too little too late.

Mashrafe Mortaza (4/38) was the star of the bowling for Bangladesh rattling the Indian top order with pace and accuracy and this was followed by left-arm spin bowlers taking the rest of the six wickets.

When the time to bowl came, India came up against Tamim Iqbal who smashed the bowling around for 51 off just 53 balls and gave Bangladesh the momentum needed to chase a smallish total. A couple of early wickets could well have given India the chance to make something of this, but regular contributions kept India away. Three half centuries ensured that the top order fired on a much easier pitch in the second half of the match.

The star of the batting was Tamim with some blistering shots including a six off Zaheer Khan that sailed well over mid-wicket and summed up the kind of day the two teams were having. On another day, that could have been miscued and lobbed up for a catch. But not today. It was Bangladesh's day all the way.

For India, the headaches are just beginning and they will need to win against Bermuda and Sri Lanka with huge margins to stay ahead of Bangladesh on run rate. That is, of course, assuming Bangladesh loses to Sri Lanka and beats Bermuda. But for the moment, let's not count on anything, shall we?
