But all that could well change this time around. The Australian team isn't the strong outfit of 2003 and Gilchrist isn't exactly in the form of his life. Although he has scored over a 1,000 runs in ODIs in 32 matches since January 2006, his form has been patchy at best. In the recently-concluded CB Series in Australia, his highest score was 61 with only one more score of fifty-plus to his credit.
In World Cups, he has seen tremendous success. Keeping to bowlers of the calibre of Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie is challenging enough, but he is one of Australia's main batsmen too at the top of the order. His explosive batting has often got Australia to a brisk start, like in the 2003 final against India.

Australia has won their last 17 matches in World Cups. An incredible record in itself and for Gilchrist, who has been part of all 17 matches, it must be a further challenge to keep it going. The recent form reversal of Australia notwithstanding, a lot would depend on Gilchrist to if Australia is to retain their crown. And not just behind the stumps, but also in front of them with bat in hand.
Behind the stumps, Gilchrist has 35 dismissals to his credit in World Cups in 20 matches. In front, he has 6 fifties with a top score of 99. There are a lot of personal records to play for, but being the team man that he is, his main aim will be the successful defence of the title for a second time running.
Gilchrist could well have been captain, but he has been part of an Australian era that has seen some outstanding talent over the last 15 years. He may have made a good captain too for he is known for his ability to strategise and as one of the senior players in the team along with Ponting and McGrath, Gilchrist will be looked up to for advice and direction in the Caribbean. But can he keep the winning streak going?
